When Words Aren't Enough

The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they reveal knowledge.
They have no speech, they use no words;
no sound is heard from them.
Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.
-- Psalm 19:1-4

Words can be so inadequate.
Words often merely point
to what we are trying to say.
Words far too often
just get in the way.

What word can adequately describe God's love?
What word can adequately describe love at all?

When I look at the stars in the dark Shenandoah sky
or at the the sun rising over the Blue Ridge
or at it setting over the Appalachians
the heavens declare the glory of God.

Do you ever feel like you lack just the right word?
Do you ever feel like the right word doesn't exist?

Do you ever feel like no word is big enough to express
the emotion or feeling in your heart and on your lips?

I don't have the words ...
so look to the sky ...
to the sun as it sets ...
to the moon and the stars ...
and to the sun when it rises ...

And maybe, just maybe
you will hear the words
that I can't find.
